Geo.
Ausden was born in Watford in May 1884. He was one of seven children.
His father, George Snr, was from the Great Missenden area of Buckinghamshire,
and had moved to Watford to take up employment with the railway.
They
lived in Sutton Road, Watford. George Jr was a bit of an entrepreneur
from an early age. He left school at 13 and soon had his own barrow
selling greengroceries. He later saw an opportunity to make some
money out of scrap metals. He started his own business in 1901,
operating from Fearnley Street and a yard at Stone's Alley (rear
of Market Street, now Wellstones).

Trade
really took off and George diversified. He opened a bookies
office at the front of the premises and also owned a greyhound
race track in Radlett Road, Watford, called The Riverside Stadium.
He raced trotting ponies, even taking them to the Continent.

He lived hard, worked hard and played hard. It caught up with
him after a drink at the pub one Saturday lunchtime, and he
died in his chair that afternoon from a heart attack, in May
1938. He was just 53.
